Where have I gone wrong?

This evening my house was in complete disarray...I told my kids to clean up the toys that were strewn about the whole house..."whoever made this mess needs to clean it up...and I think its all of you so CLEAN IT" (I wasn't yelling just talking loudly). All 3 kids are looking at me like a deer in headlights and Sammy says innocently "usually the kids make the mess and the mom cleans it up!"...I seriously sat there for a full minute not knowing what to say...it is true but that is not how it should be! Oh, she will live to regret that phrase!

Lay down the law! We just started chore charts... they should actually be called mommy chore charts, because I read them, walk them through every single step of the chore and then show them where to put their sticker.

My mom's favorite trick was to let us know that whatever was left out when we went to bed would be gone in the morning. It only took a few mornings of our toys "disappearing" and her not giving them back to realize we had to pick them up. I still remember this! (And she would eventually give the toys back a month or so later but we got the point).

That so made me laugh! It's weird how they come up with these things. Maybe you should do a reverse day when they clean up YOUR messes. :)

That's awesome! My mom always just took whatever we wouldn't clean up and put it in a "gunny sack" (something from joy school). She even made us buy it back from her. Mean mom....

That is so funny!! I'm so mean I wont even let Blake get out more than one game, or puzzle, train track... at a time, it gets way too out of hand!! That way when he wants to play with something else he has to clean up what he's been playing with. MEAN MOM!! I know! I guess there will be NO mother of the year for me!!

Sounds like it's time for a paradigm shift!! It is amazing how they see the world! However, it is nice to know so that you can make some changes while they are young!
Good luck with that!! Although I can totally understand how it happens!! Sometimes it is just easier and faster to clean up- and have it done the way you want it. But, the value lies in them learning to do it!
You are a great mom- so I look forward to hearing how you deal with this!!

That is funny. I think they all believe that, they just arent bold enough to say it. I know that is my kids belief too.

My house feels like it's in constant disarray since school let out, and we're rushing out the door to the pool everyday, and rushing back home, to shower, cook dinner, and do the bedtime routine, cleaning time has been lost! I am starting a chore chart this week, I just bought the reward stickers.

K, that is hilarious! I am pretty sure that was not in the job description when I signed on to be a mom. Then again, there were a lot of things that weren't really on that job description that we all still deal with. Good luck and let me know if you get them to clean up their toys without having to "talk loudly" to them!

I'm with Marissa's mom. That's exactly what we do. I tell them they need it cleaned up NOW. If they're fiddle farting around I grab a bag/box whatever's handy and start picking up. If I'm in a bad mood I put it to the DI (or pack it away to put at my mom's house), if I'm feeling nice I put it away and they have to earn it back after a week or more. Right now they have a few stuffed animals and a basket of wooden blocks. LOL

That is hilarious! I would have just started laughing and then grabbed the camera and took a picture of the way I thought my face looked at the time. Your kids are funny!
